On June 24th, 2010, and only a very short time after Maryland Energy Resources, LLC (MER) began their site construction of the coal mine located Grantsville, Maryland, an unauthorized discharge of mine site runoff occurred into the Casselman River . This discharge occurred upstream from where two Maryland Endanagered species reside.  The Maryland Departmernt of the Environment was promptly notified of this apparent "accident". However, it remains unknown as to whether there was any enforcement action brought against the mining company.  It is clear that this accident supports existing public concerns that MER and the Bureau Of Mines (MDE), are incapable of protecting the Casselman River, and it's resources, under this permitting activity.
